Pretty crazy deep dive article into how Singapore’s public transport fares are due for a major overhaul. It argues that the current rules are outdated and don’t match up with how people actually travel these days and that it’s a golden opportunity for the government to do so during the Fare Review Exercise.
Also, very interesting idea about removing COE, making car travel so damn congested that it sucks to drive anywhere, and thereby making public transport a whole lot more appealing to the everyday car driver!
The article makes a good point about spreading resources wisely. Instead of having buses everywhere, they suggest more focused routes that actually serve communities better, which, to be fair, is what they’re doing now, like with the shuttle bus service that Marine Parade just started.
They use examples like MRT stations near big housing areas to show how good planning can make a big difference…. again, like the new TEL line.
They also talk about making premium services like express buses more attractive with simpler fare rules and caps. It’s all about making public transport faster and more appealing than driving.
Overall, they’re pushing for a fairer system with lower fares for students and seniors, and a setup that encourages more people to ditch their cars.
