A great piece by Donovan Choy, a local economist that hasn’t been writing in a while, which is a shame.
The article takes a critical look at Jamus Lim’s push for a minimum wage in Singapore, and questions whether Jamus, who is known for his economic background, is prioritizing popularity over economic rationale, similar to figures like Paul Krugman who famously flip-flopped on the issue.
Choy suggests that once economists like Lim step into politics, they bow to political pressure and soundbite politics, which compromises their initial academic integrity.
What a reminder that what sounds good politically isn’t always sound economically!
